one tough break...

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks

What a nasty bit of bad luck for my daughter! Just as her cheerleading squad is in final preparations for their competition next month, a chance bad fall during some kiddish horsing around outiside with her friends last night and she's either got a bad ankle sprain or a slight fracture - the doctor's aren't sure which. She came home with a huge swelling on her ankle so we were quick to ice and wrap it. Today, we spent the afternoon at the emergency dept getting x-rays and assesments. The doctor said he's 75% sure there's a slight fracture in the growth plate area of her ankle bone - either way, we're scheduled for a consultation with the orthopaedic surgeon and for sure, she's not going to be doing any weight bearing exercise for at least 4-6 weeks. Right now it's splinted in a half-cast and she's learning to get around on one leg. Tomorrow, I'll be off in search of crutches. Hopefully, it's not fractured but I kind of fear she won't be able to actively compete this year and that's a shame since she's worked so hard since making the varsity team in September.

But these things happen and they do feel devastating - I remember spraining my ankle just 4 days before our national championships in 2000! Thankfully it was just a moderate sprain and I was still able to compete once I got it taped for competition. I'm not sure if taping will help for her - we'll have to see after the consultation, maybe she'll be able to participate in the last competition of the season. For the most part, although it feels like the end of the world at the time, we just have to shrug, move forward and focus on healing.

productive meetings ...

via 43 Folders: 9 tips for running more productive meetings.
Yes, the words productive and meetings can be found in the same sentence together. I have to say that of the many meetings I go to in the run of a week (both professional and personal) most of them are quite productive. In fact, it's a bit of a rarity (although not impossible) for me to find myself in a meeting where I just want to stick pins in my eyes. Apparently, from the complaints I've heard - that's not the case for others. But in addition to the invaluable information found at the above link, Point number 4 (No electronic grazing) just about killed me. I hadn't heard that term before and the mental picture I derived from it was priceless.

It's tournament season again ...

Well the competition season is back as of this weekend past with the Fundy Open 2006 being the 1st tournament of 2006 in the Atlantic Fencing League. Despite some super frigid weather the competiton was well attended with the bulk of the fencers being in the under 17 age category. This is to be expected as they are in the full swing of preparations for selection to the team that we will be sending to the 2007 Canada Winter Games next March. It's hard to believe how quickly the time goes by between Games.

I'm so glad that D actually fenced this time in Open Epee, and did super for his first time back after about 2 1/2 years away from the sport. I think he ended up in the top 10 (out of 25). I think he's pretty pleased with that result which should hopefully help him motivate to train more. And I did pretty well in the Open Foil competition, coming in 6th after the pools and ended up 7th out of 28 in the overall Open. The best part is that I'm earning my way into the Open/Men's Super pool (top 8) consistently now, so i just have to work harder at winning more of those tough bouts. Then I took 1st out of 10 in the Women's Foil competition. That Women's gold medal match was a tough one, providing the spectators with a bit of excitement and myself with more than a bit of pressure. The final score was 15-13 and those last two points I scored were ugly. Personally, I felt I could have fenced much better and I have some ideas of what needs to be worked on.

Well, two weeks from now is the UNB Shield so let's see if I can change up for that.

It's also called Oompa Loompa and it is the first OS X trojan to be discovered. Affecting only machines running tiger it propogates via iChat. Not a big worry at the moment although it is disappointing to have the mac safety bubble summarily popped. Don't panic, get informed. Read more about it here.

camino 1.0 ...

caminoHas arrived - go get it.
Why I like camino: Well, for one thing, the UI is very Mac OS, much more so than Firefox. I think that's probably why I couldn't bring myself to make Firefox the default browser on my mac. If only it had the development tools extensions that Firefox has... well maybe someday.
You can read more about Camino here and here.

IE7 Beta 2 now available ....

ie7b2.jpgMicrosoft announced yesterday that the IE7 beta version 2 has been released so that we developers can test our sites. I'm not entirely sure what they were thinking as the beta version overwrites the current stable version 6. F'cryin' out loud! Shouldn't testing software be standalone??? A workaround is to install IE7 and then install a standalone version of IE6 which is probably what I'm going to have to do. You can get a standalone IE6 at browsers.evolt.org). (See also the msdn blogs site for comments on IE7b2.)

By the way, apparently IE display hacks such as the Holly Hack and the *html filter do not work in IE7 so it's getting imperative to bone up on and use conditional comments.

For more information on and an understanding of the display bugs currently breaking IE6, take a read through the thread Taking on IE bugs: IE does not have multiple CSS bugs -- just one or two.
